Short answer
AI SDR and AI BDR usually name software applied to top-of-funnel work. Some products assist humans; others automate bounded steps. An autonomous salesperson is a broader claim: the software would own a bounded sales objective through a close.
None of these labels proves independence, reliability, delivery, conversation quality, or revenue. Buyers need the exact operating contract and outcome evidence.
RESEARCH FINDINGS
Salesforce defines an SDR as a sales professional handling top-of-funnel activity before a prospect is ready to buy, including data gathering, education, qualification, and meeting booking.
Salesforce defines a BDR as a role generating new business opportunities through prospecting, qualification, nurturing, and meeting booking. The same source says SDR and BDR are often interchangeable and may be divided differently by each company.
Salesforce's AI BDR guide describes software that handles tasks such as prospecting and qualification and is configured with playbooks, channels, and data. It frames the product as part of a sales representative's toolkit; it does not establish a universal definition for every AI BDR.
The US Federal Trade Commission's 2024 enforcement announcement reported allegations that AI product claims were made without adequate testing or support, including a service compared with human lawyers without testing that comparison. This is enforcement context, not a benchmark of sales systems.
OUR INTERPRETATION
SDR and BDR are organizational labels, not technical specifications. The useful comparison is operational: what decisions can the software make, what channels can it use, where must a human take over, and what outcome is it accountable for?
| Label | Common bounded scope | Claim that still needs proof |
|---|---|---|
| AI SDR | Research, qualification, early engagement, meeting booking | Whether it assists or independently operates, and with what results |
| AI BDR | Prospecting, new-opportunity creation, qualification, nurturing | Whether the SDR/BDR distinction is real in that product |
| Autonomous salesperson | A bounded objective across the commercial journey, including commitment and close | Whether it can complete that broader job safely and reliably |
“Autonomous” should mean the system owns the stated work inside explicit authority. It should not mean that hidden human operators complete the hard parts or that a meeting-booking workflow is renamed as a full salesperson.
PROPOSED IMPROVEMENTS
Every AI sales product should publish a compact job contract:
- Scope: the exact stages and tasks the system performs.
- Authority: which messages, offers, commitments, and external actions it may make.
- Human handoff: the point where a person must decide or act.
- Evidence: attempts, provider acceptance, delivery, replies, qualified opportunities, closes, and payments kept as separate measures.
- Failure policy: how the system stops, recovers, suppresses duplicates, and reports uncertainty.
This would make role labels comparable without pretending that different companies use SDR and BDR in the same way.
IMPLEMENTED CAPABILITIES
NIKO is being built and tested as an autonomous salesperson, not presented as a proven AI SDR or AI BDR. Its implemented public proof surface keeps attempted sends, committed provider acceptances, proven delivery, replies, closes, and payments distinct.
At the reconciled 17 September 2026 checkpoint, Experiment Zero recorded one attempted send and one committed provider acceptance. Delivery was not proven. Replies, verified waitlist closes, and verified paying customers were all zero. NIKO has not closed a customer.
Those records demonstrate a durable evidence and status capability. They do not demonstrate successful autonomous selling. Read the current Experiment Zero status and the dated reconciliation entry.
WHAT REMAINS UNKNOWN
- Whether any product using an AI SDR or AI BDR label operates independently across all tasks buyers may infer from that label.
- Whether a full-cycle autonomous salesperson can earn trust and complete a real sale without a human closer.
- Which division of prospecting, qualification, conversation, and closing produces better outcomes in a given market.
- Whether NIKO can turn a provider-accepted message into delivery, reply, commitment, payment, and a genuine customer.
Direct answers
What is an AI SDR?
An AI SDR is software used for sales-development work such as prospect research, lead qualification, early outreach, or meeting booking. The label alone does not show whether the system assists a human, acts independently, or closes deals.
What is an AI BDR?
An AI BDR is software used for business-development work, commonly prospecting, qualification, nurturing, or early outreach. SDR and BDR labels overlap and companies use them differently.
How is an autonomous salesperson different?
An autonomous salesperson is a broader proposed job: it would own a bounded commercial objective across research, outreach, conversation, follow-up, objection handling, negotiation, commitment, and close. That scope must be proved through outcomes, not inferred from the label.
Has NIKO proved autonomous selling?
No. At the 17 September 2026 reconciliation, NIKO had one committed provider acceptance, no proven delivery, zero replies, and zero verified paying customers. NIKO has not closed a customer.
